Chapter XV

Louisiana

James

I lay next to Arianna with my eyes wide open, ears listening for any sound, and body ready to attack. We were careful before returning to the hotel, and my rational mind knew that our enemies did not know where we were, but my instinct to protect was overwhelming rational thought.

Our flight was later in the day, and I thought it best if we stayed in a crowd of people as much as possible. It would be difficult to spot us in a crowd, and it was unlikely that anyone would attempt anything in daylight. Yes, a vampire could easily overpower humans and compel them, but in a crowded place, someone was likely to get away. Secrecy was of utmost importance in the supernatural world. Local leaders would be furious if they had to cover up a kidnapping. I felt fairly confident we would not be attacked as long as we stayed in a crowd, but I did not sound confident even to myself.

Arianna slept for just a couple of hours. “Good morning,” she mumbled as she rolled to my side.

I put my arm around her. “How do you feel?”

“Hungry. I think I will get food at the buffet.” I shook my head no. “Room service?” Arianna asked. Again, I shook my head no.

“I think it’s best to get out of here and get with as many people as possible. We will get you some food on the way to the phone store. I already reported the phone broken, and a replacement is supposed to be ready this morning. It should not take long, and I will compel anyone I have to in order to get the phone and get out quickly.”

“Ok,” Arianna kissed me and then got up and went into the bathroom to wash up and get ready to leave.

I stood up and dressed. I put on a light colored, button down shirt and a pair of khaki slacks then checked my email. “The flight is showing on time. We will meet the wolves at the airport and then wait in the terminal,” I told Arianna when she returned to the bedroom.

I watched her as she dressed. She put on black capri leggings and a white shirt with a ring of flowers around the neckline and hem. She twisted her hair up and secured it with a clip and put on her white floppy hat.

We put on our sneakers. Arianna put her phone in the plastic protective bag. She looked up at me. “Just in case.” She dropped in a USB back up of her documents and mine; again, just in case. She put the phone in her crossbody purse and picked up her backpack.

“If they have a protective bag at the phone store, I plan to get one.”

“If not, I have a zip bag that you can use for your phone. It’s not as good as a phone pouch, but it should keep your phone dry.”

“Ready?” I put on my hat.

“As ready as I will ever be.
